Mather Quad

I opted to take a break on the Mather Quad with the hopes of taking in as much action while perched atop the Mather steps.The amazing aspect to this location is how many buildings you are surrounded by and the bustle of people and animals navigating the many walkways.

To the north are the Law school and PBL business school, kitty-corner to each other on their side of the Bellflower Road. To the west is Guildford House, Mather House, Mather Dance and the newly opened Tinkham Veale University Center (TVUC). I am surprised to see the progress being made in remodeling the southern edge of the quad, which includes Haydn and Clark Halls. Over the years, it appears all but these last two buildings have been tended to. It is nice to see them receiving attention. The corner of Bellflower and Ford is visible in the distance to the east, providing a view of the renovated MSASS social sciences building.

The construction walls/fencing surrounding this area are slowly decreasing with each semester. Passersby have worn down lush grasses into brown dirt mazes across various corners of the quad, eager to navigate around the fence walls erected to protect them. On the other side of the fences, construction workers are breaking for lunch, trading in their perches on scaffolding and roofs for solid ground. A welcome break it seems as their laughs carry across the lawn.

The quad is packed. All the walkways are have bodies squished four people wide. Class just let out and everyone is on the hunt for their next meal or snack, perhaps even a midday snooze...I am instantly jealous of how refreshing a 30 minute power nap would feel.

The melting pot that makes up our campus is evident in this bustling corner of campus..it is a welcome sight to see everyone from students, faculty, staff, vendors, landscapers, street cars, etc. using the quad as a central highway. Although everywhere I look, I seem to be engulfed in a mass of people, I still feel as if I could close my eyes and drift off all the while on these steps!
